Hi lana,
You ask who mary is? If you search on the tag Song Jae-Rim, and look in comments section, you will see that everyone is looking for mary. She is the biggest fangirl of Song Jae-Rim and ever so funny. She is also known as, mary, high priestess of the cult of rim. By now she is a legend with the beanies. So much so that JB and GF have mentioned her in their posts and she joined the DB staff not long ago.

If you want to read about the awesomeness that is mary, I looked up two very funny comment sections from last year. And there was an article about SJR this week, which was also very funny. You can have a look at that one too.

hello

I am so mad at my relatives right now. I haven´t gotten a single strawberry this summer. I raise them, then other folks go to Viljandi and pick them when I am away or at work and they keep it all. When I pick something I always share. But they call and say: oh, I gave half the box of strawberries to a friend as a birthday gift, was that alright? NO IT IS NOT! Bastards. And then they complain the ones they bought from the market were bigger and sweeter, can´t I do something about it? Oh, the nerve! I want to kill them. My lazy chain smoking aunt, who never moved a finger in the garden, is the worst. should I just poison them strawberries? Makjang...But I want to poison seletcively, how is that done? I should get advice from a serial killer. Who´s the best man out there? Which method to use? Will they catch on to me? So many things to consider when killing someone

Or I need one of those keep calm and... cards right now. Otherwise, would I get a bald spot like Gong Shim? My life feels like that right now, everyone is just using me and I cannot stop them from going there and pillage. Doesn´t help with the stress that Granny broke a leg and can´t move or go to toilet so dad brought her a toilet chair. That´s why Dear My Friends is on hold for me, too hard to watch when there are real people having problems around me. Granny is talking weird too, like she should break that plaster and her foot shouldnt heal, and how she thinks maybe she doesnt need to eat any more. She sometimes gives me chills and I scold her
sorry for ranting. life is such a drama.

but at least I have friends /colleagues, who are awesome and let me catch the afternoon train instead of staying late for work. Yay!!!!

anyway, been watching Oh Hae Young Again, 38 task force and MotW
OHYA is not as entertaining as it could be, and it misses its chances here and there for more depth about some things. Like, why has Soo Kyung been turned from a tough girl into a "marriage or doom"-kind of woman? they should have gone all the way. That they chicken out of making precedents feels so hopeless...
I keep watching because I just wanted to see if they reach any kind of resolve cause it would have kept bugging me. I can accept whatever ending they give me, cause I am not that invested in the characters or even the romance. I just can´t stand the kind of loose ends where you can see it happens cause they dont know how to tie them rather than on purpose.

38 task force is like a spider web which starts from such thin threads you can´t imagine how flies can be caught with it, and then it grows circle by circle. there is a lot of mystery at this point, and while that´s usually a good thing, I am not sure whether it is the calculated kind of mystery or just careless in this case. hopefully calculated but I like the dramas boldness to point out privileged peoples´ attitudes and behavior.

MotW is still very confusing to me, those mechanisms behind the curses seem a bit too complicated. I lose track all the time just what happens why. but her activated mode hair is so pretty, can´t it stay like that? Like Sophie in Howl´s Moving Castle...

mm, question for you... are there any loose ends from dramas that kept bugging you to no end, that you have perhaps been trying ti tie in your mind repeatedly?

@redfox, I'm curious...I keep seeing mentions of Howl's Moving Castle everytime MotW is mentioned. What drama is that and how it is related to each other? As in similar plotlines or is MotW and an inspired adaption of Howl's Moving Castle?

I've not watched MotW, but Howl's Moving Castle is a Japanese anime directed by Hayao Miyazaki, same director as other well known anime like Spirited Away, Tonari no Totoro, etc.

I think witchcraft / magic, gray hair, transformations and curses that affect the body physically, maybe those things seem similar. otherwise the story is completely different.... but yeah, the general feel of it is also very similar to a fantasy anime somehow, I suppose

Required fields are marked *

Hey Superfox ~

I was sure that if anyone could follow MotW it was you, but even you think it's confusing. There are just too many step-royalty running around with big, big black magic issues that it's a fairy tale mash-up greater than any Grimm Brothers' character dilemma. But Yoon Shi Yoon, I watch it for him and am hoping for a glimpse of that amazing tiger again~

0

Required fields are marked *

yeah, even though I am trying my damnedest. But it is as confusing as Britain voting to leave the EU. Still it is so prettily shot that I kind of don´t care. Maybe turn of the subs and sound, put on a song and enjoy it as a very long music video?

oh, and it is like a fairy tale and fairy tales are sometimes nonsensical, unlinear and fragmented.

Oooh Diana Wynne Jones fan! :D *waves* I remember getting Howl's Moving Castle as a gift and saving up for months just to buy another DWJ book. Every time I mention HMC, it's usually the movie that folks are familiar with. I liked the book better and found the JP movie so disappointing because it was so different from the book. But I'm glad I gave his other movies a try because Miyazaki is magic.

I know right? Howl was so different in the movie. Like a too cool to emote drama hero instead of the charming, mysterious boy with issues whom I loved in the book. And what the hell was that half crow transformation? Just...why? But most people really like the movie so I keep my bitterness hidden.

I liked Castle in the Air (the same people as Howl's Moving Castle--kind of. I'm not going to post a spoiler. But I recommend the book.) And all the Crestimanci (sp?) stories are super.
Miazaki is excellent, but don't think you're going to know what the book is about AT ALL after watching the animation.

0

I think both had their charm, the book was a bit more serious, while the anime, I think, was aiming for, um, some irony in the humor department. I did cringe at some bits of the anime, but I loved the moments of irony. there is a bit of irony in MotW as well, sort of what goes around comes around and a boomerang will some day hit you. there is this boomerang flying and we are yet to see all who fall.

Try siccing Master of Noodle on your no-good, strawberry-swiping kin... but cover your tracks well! Otherwise we'll have to send Jin Sang to bail you out of the hoosegow. ;-)

Sorry to hear of Granny's broken leg. My family has had similar experiences. Is it possible to get her outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air? It might help perk her up. The poor dear sounds depressed... If her physician, hopefully a gerontologist, doesn't know about it, s/he should. (My Mom became delirious because of an undetected urinary tract infection. Once the underlying infection was treated, her mind cleared up, too.) It is heartbreaking to witness elders enduring such experiences. Thanks to you, she is not going through it alone. ;-)

thanks all! I was off to Viljandi to see what I can save. there were still strawberries but since there have been heavy rains and then an unbelievable heat they were pretty much all fermented. still, I picked whatever I could and had some to eat ( and I don´t mind any quality or shape or size as long as they are MY strawberries!) and to bring home.
maybe it is a good thing that those relatives picked them. at least they didnt rot. bUt they still could have told me. let´s not fret over things that pass, like Do Kyung. I have hands that can get rough from work and feet that can hurt. I can see the flowers, I can hear the birds...

but the weather was seriously... 33C in the shadow, which to many of you is not much, but add record humidity and physical work under hot sun. then we get back to Tallinn with the sea winds and stuff and Dad says it was pretty warm... commence evil laughter. so no wonder everything was ripe at the same time

Thanks to Carole, Voice and Am for recommending Japanese movie Orange in last week’s OT. In return, I'm sharing three versions of Orange's original ost Mirai (Future) which I found on Japanese Youtube. This song sung by Kobukuro is so beautifully emotive, listening to it could easily evoke both fond and sad memories, and remind us of people from our past whom we missed.

The first one is manga "romance" version from the perspective of Naho, the colored full screen manga drawings at the end of the video are really beautiful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4rg15tsWHs

The second one is manga "bromance" version from the perspective of Suwa, Naho’s future husband. The tears that Suwa (light-haired guy) shed while concealing his own feelings for Naho in order to bring Kakeru (black-haired guy) and Naho together is so touching, this is what we don't get to see in the movie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQCDrUhPgoU

The third one is the movie version, it is quite interesting to compare the manga versions and movie version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwhkIfS8b6E

I had been through a similar experience as Kakeru, it had been so hard for an adult to handle the grief and self-reproach, what’s there to say for a 17 year old teenager. In retrospect, there were things I desperately wanted to handle differently no matter what it takes if I could go back in time, but regrets can only remain as regrets.

There are lots of movies/dramas with this theme, if only we knew that certain actions of ours would lead to regrettable outcomes, we would definitely want to act differently if given a second chance, Orange, Proposal Daisakusen, and even Oh Hae Young Again all shared this same theme.

In Beautiful Gong Shim, I do not quite understand why Dan Tae rejected GS, he could have kept her by his side while he unravels his life's mystery. But still, kudos to the producers for having GS declared her strong resolve to continue to love DT to her heart’s desire, at least, I don't want to see GS's friendship with Yoon Soo being misunderstood and used to fuel DT's jealously, which is a typical kdrama trope.

Probably a new trend is emerging in kdramas, gender roles are being switched, the girls are getting very courageous and forward in expressing their love, as in BGS. And also in OHYA, Hae Young always said to Do Kyung she is an easy woman who is too eager to please him and always comes running at his beck and call.

Required fields are marked *

Dan Tae´s change and rejection were so not in accordance with the character. if they had to make him change, why change so drastically. it is not that easy to just flip a person inside out no matter what the circumstances. It aint realistic. the change is too drastical

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's right, DT' was flipped inside out, I don't quite like it, it defies logic. I just saw BGS preview for tonight's ep, there is a scene with DT witnessing Yoon Soo leaning on GS's shoulder, so DT is getting jealous in this way after all, as in so many kdramas, what a let down. For once, the quirkiness of DT & GS made me think that BGS would be a refreshingly different rom-com, but here we see the same trope again. urgh!

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It was only a preview, so maybe we shouldn't get into conclusions until the episode airs. There is a sneakpeak for episode 13 posted on soompi if you guys want to check it out- and I think you'd like what you see of the development!

I agree that the change is abrupt, but the difference is that he realizes now that they feelings are mutual. The realization hit him at once that it's different now that his one-sided love turns serious, and I think in this state he couldn't handle the relationship. He didn't say "I don't like you," but , "Things have changed now and I can't return your feelings." Maybe there's truth in those words only he know.

GS told DT in her drunken state that he is broke, messy and cheesy, but despite of all these she still likes him, so couldn't he tell that GS is not expecting much from him, she just wants to be by his side to support him. Since he likes her too, he should also consider how his rejection is hurting her and making her feel uncomfortable in his presence.

Happy Friday Beanies! I had a very productive drama watching week. Saw BGS, Police unit 38 (excited for the coming episodes!), started Doctors (Kim Rae Won Oppa ❤️) and Beautiful Mind.
Is anyone else watching 99.9 Keiji Senmon Bengoshi?
I'm hooked and really enjoying this jap drama which is surprisingly funny and offbeat. Loving the quirky characters and am waiting for subs for the last epi.

Also, any Nam Goong Min fans can enlighten me what happened to the show he directed? I know it's complete but what happened to it? I'm fangirling him at the moment and have BGS OST on when I travel on the train.

And finally, and are there any shows with good gal pals/womance? (I don't like the term womance tho...) Esp those still in school, like School 2013 but girl-centric. After watching Doctors I'm reminiscing my school days with my girlfriends and the crazy stuff we used to do.

Should we explain why too? I find it is easier to remember if I understand the background.

In case you want to know: jap is a racial slur. It became derogatory during WWll. Considering what the Japanese went through with internment camps and relocation, the term brings up bad memories and current racial discrimination.

So while saying jap seems no different than using the short version of Thai, Kor, and more, it very much is. The preferred terms are "j-dramas" or "dorama" (how they say it in Japan, correct? Like Thai - lakorn?)

Also this site is depressing because of all the negative history but pretty eye opening - http://www.rsdb.org/full

Thank you Owl for explaining! I really really appreciate it. I honestly did not know that I was being rude, and I will be certain to take note from now on.

Sorry to Spazmo, Kreyon and anyone else I have offended, it really was unintentional. I sincerely apologize and I promise not to do it again. I wasn't ignoring your comments, I just didn't really know where you were coming from so I didn't know how to reply.

Recently I have unfortunately seemed to have upset others as well with some of my choice of words, and I do appreciate it when you Beanies try to explain why I'm being corrected so that I may understand, and I don't feel like I'm being misunderstood to be a jerk when really I'm not trying to upset anyone. I just want to share my thoughts, squee over Oppa and chat with fellow drama lovers, and maybe make some new friends?
Have a good week everyone.

Aww Michykdrama, don't worry too much about it. :D

They were just trying to teach you stuff. It's great that you learn it from DB than elsewhere cos beanies will understand that and try to teach you, while in other places, the internet is toxic. :( (Also thanks spazmo and Kreyon and Purple Owl for your level-headedness!)

I've made a couple of mistakes myself when I was new here. Still make a couple now, but beanies are chill about spreading cultural awareness. Besides, it's better to say a taboo word by mistake than be someone who uses nice words to say nasty things.

0

Thanks Mary. ❤️

Oh! Mary is in a convo thread with me!

Sorry, beanie milestone here. Fangirled a little.

DB is the best place on the Internet to learn. Other communities don't try as hard to be understanding ? (I'm a kpop multi-fandom so...)

I really like what you said about "taboo word by mistake vs. nice words to say nasty things." Great insight!

No problem, love. I accidentally read ahead and saw spazmo's reply before your original post. So I knew what to look for. I've always been wary of the term (might be from being raised in Cali and vaguely knowing) but I only learned the details when I started watching anime. And this year, awareness has been increasing.

I'm glad I could help. I did a bit of research to phrase my comment and came upon that website. I'll be studying it for the next week, lol. So thank you as well.

I am trying to think of dramas that are young women friendship centric, while I do that may I recommend some of my 2 favourite female centric coming-of-age films?

Sunny (korean) about a group of friends (all girls) who try to get together again after having parted ways after high school.
80s feels

Now and Then (american) about a group of friends (all girls) growing up in the suburbs in the 1970s

The dramas Ex-Girlfriend Club and One More Happy Ending have great friendships betweem women but it is not set in high school.

The lakorn series Hormones also have some good female friendship in high school (probably the closest one to School 2013) although the female friendships are not always the focus.

Unfortunately, women centric coming-of-age films that focus on friendship and that are not completely depressing seem to be a rare thing (yet we have so many Stand By Me type films and dramas). I absolutely love them too so if anyone has more recommendations ^^

Thanks for the recs! Yes I totally agree there are too few female centric shows in general, esp those that don't have romance as the main focus. Why are women usually portrayed as bitchy and fighting over some guy?

I Need Romance 1-3 and Woman Who Wants To Marry have groups of ladies who are bestfriends as main characters. But I haven't seen any of them so not sure if they're a fun watch.

WWWTM has good reviews from friends though so I guess you can start with that if you want. :D

There was also a jtbc drama, Seonam Girls High School Investigators. But I also didn't watch it so I can't tell if you'll like it. *hangs head shamefully*

Protect The Boss is not female-centric but does have awesome women friendships and frenemy dynamic.

For sistership in Kdrama, I can only think of she was pretty and the woman who can't get married (I don't think this is the title but it's the one with kim bum)

yeah I don't like the term 'vomance' either.

The best connection betveen 2 vomen I've ever seen in a kdrama, is probably the female lead and second lead in I Hear Your Voice - they vere bitter rivals but it vas all about THEM, not any rivalry over a guy, and they had mutual, if grudging, respect for each other.

Sassy Go Go also handled its girls really vell - they vere total enemies and hated each other but again, their grudge vas betveen them and not to do vith any boy.

and if you are open to movies, you should definitely try Kamikaze Girls. It's about the reluctant friendship betveen a Yanki and a Lolita, and it is amazing. But it's sad there aren't that many dramas or movies in any country that are actually about female friendship.

Yes, I'm very sad bromance seems to be more in vogue than sisterhood! And I've decided I shall use sisterhood or gal pals instead of womance. Sounds better to me.

Anyone heard of the good news. Park Bo Young accepted her role, she'll be returning to dramaland!!!! I'm so excited for her new role :)

Park Bo Young To Make Transformation With JTBC Drama

Park Bo Young will be making a drama comeback!

On June 24, a representative from Park Bo Young’s agency spoke with news outlets and revealed that the actress has been confirmed for JTBC’s upcoming Friday-Saturday drama “Strong Woman Do Bong Soon” (working title).

The representative explained that filming will start in October. Prior to this, Park Bo Young will be learning martial arts to prepare for her role.

“Strong Woman Do Bong Soon” is being planned to air in January 2017. Park Bo Young will be playing the titular role of Do Bong Soon. She will be making a comeback in a year since tvN’s “Oh My Ghostess.”

The drama will be written by Baek Mi Kyung who previously wrote “My Love Eun Dong” and directed by Lee Hyung Min of “Ms. Temper and Nam Jung Gi.”

Park Bo Young is expected to make a transformation from her usual cute and lovely image with her role in this new drama.

On other news, I've finished watching Entertainer. Despite what people say I actually really love it! It's one of the most warmest dramas I've ever watch. It's so positive and heartwarming. I'm glad there isn't much Romance in the end. Personally I loved this drama :)

Mirror of the Witch is the only other drama I'm hooked on. Oh my god...this drama is very addictive and so good. Words can't describe!

I think Entertainer for me is all about character development and the importance of having good people around you who'd believe in you no matter what. It's all about the importance of friendship and family and the support they give each other. That is happiness and success. Once does not need fame to be happy or feel successful. I love the home messages this drama gave. Hope you enjoy it in the end as much as I appreciated this drama :)

I finally gave in and watched Reply1988. I read a lot of comments on how it is the best Kdrama of recent times but i found it a little laggy at times. I liked that they included the parents but even with the extended time, it seemed like there was too much of the parents and too little of the kids.

I think they spent like 30 mins on the kids and 1 hour on the parents when it should have been the other way around. So you ended up with having these bunch of extremely close friends who are strangely missing when something huge is happening in one of their's life - Taek's father's heart attack, JH's brother's surgery, DS's grandmom's death - friends all absent. So it became a case of the show telling me they are close, but i'm not really seeing it onscreen.

ofcourse when they are together (taek's loss), they are amazing and heart warming

I ended up dropping it after episode 10. Honestly though, the fact that i knew who the husband was (and that i was still rooting for the other one) probably played a part in it

PS - I watched JH's confession scene on youtube and ended up crying. I watched it for the second time and then cried fresh. Rewatched it and then cried again. At this point i finally gave up and promised not to touch anything related to R88 lest i slip into depression.

I love PBG from IRY days so I keep trying to continue. Dropped it after 2 episodes, watched some more on the plane (SQ - in case anyone is wondering) and I still cannot feel it. Ended up reading the recaps when my flight ends just to know how did Hyeri ended up choosing PBG.

I still think R88 snubbed Dramabeans best drama award from Healer :p (because this award is more important than any other awards in real life!)

For me, I feel it repetitive and no longer working is the maximum effect to me.
I loved 1997 and still adore it especially the length,
Got into the mud with with baseball bat in 1994,
But 1988 feels like something I've seen but longer, it just I can't really thinking it that much, in fact I dropped it and just watching it casually

Then tbh I knew from ep 3/4 that it was the tomorrow cantabile that gonna sing at the end.

I admit Reply1988 a little laggy at times (I blame that airtime is too long and has too many episodes). It needs patience to watch the show. Still I love the show and plan to watch again. And you know on JH's confession scene, Hye-ri cried so much, that she was removed and her scene was filmed later separately.

Yes RJY shared during many interviews that during that scene, Hye-ri was crying very hard behind the scenes because she felt JH's pain as he said farewell to his love, and it was just a very hard scene to shoot overall.

just because some people made themselves ship a guy who couldnt obviously win for never speaking up, doesnt mean the drama is bad.

I liked 1988, it lagged in places but it vas still better than 1994, even if it couldn't quite live up to 1997. I thought the heart of the drama vas in the vay they actually made Ssangmudong and its families feel like a community - I could live vith the romance but vhat gutted me hardest (seriously, I cried every time I thought of it for a veek) vas the sight of the empty alley after the families had moved avay. (I kind of feel teary even novv just thinking of that final scene vith Deok-sun going back and finding everyone's younger versions in Taek's room).

oh and I sav your comment about The Burning Sky....I think it may have been that same book though the heroine never vent to any vedding there. I should have varned you that the first tvo chapters are quite dry, if you vant to give it a try, then things get interesting only after they reach the school - the setting somehov clicks.

I liked it a lot, but not in the same way as I liked the other Reply shows. Part of it was that I'm the same age as the parents in the show - just seeing the transitions they went through as they were aging, and their feelings as the kids were growing up and moving on with their lives... those things really got to me.

i loved 1988, but i admit that it took me a few weeks to get into it. i was so busy with moving when the show first started that, while i downloaded all the episodes, i mostly skimmed due to time constraint, exhaustion, and general inability to settle down and focus on kdramas. i don't think it was till the third or fourth week (so basically a month) that i finally had the leisure of mind to get into it... and then of course, i had to go back and re-watch all the episodes. and THEN i loved it.

a lot of people adore the reply series (myself included), but i honestly don't think it's necessarily for everyone. some people find it dull, which i consider to be a valid complaint. depending on where you're coming from, that is. i mean, if you aren't native korean (or familiar with the culture, language, songs, etc.) i can see how it would difficult to get into. there are the common themes of love and friendship, but that's not enough to appeal to absolutely everybody.

i've always found it amazing and fascinating how so many non-koreans can enjoy korean dramas, when they have to watch it via subs. personally i find it difficult to enjoy a movie or tv show that's not created in a language i already understand. i always find myself wondering whether those subs are accurate/well interpreted (having seen some horrible subs on kdramas in my time, but no idea how to create or edit them). i make an exception for miyazaki's gorgeous animations, but i only truly enjoy the japanese versions now after i've watched the english-dubbed versions to death.

Please show, don't go all great first episodes and then the writer takes crazy pills around the fifth one.

No amnesia, noble love, and I could do without wrist grabbing.

Please. I'm hoping this stays good.

Happy weekend
I watch Abnormal Summit ep 101 -102 right before they changed all the cast again, except Guillaume and Alberto. There's one particular question about what they feel need to change in South Korea's society.
Among others, there's some answer that intrigued me,
- Korean don't talk to someone like an adult even when they already coming of age, people in 20-s is still referred as aegi (baby) and being older is more preferred (mostly) as the right opinion.
- how they liked a song because other people like it and it ranks high on the chart
- how everyone is abnormally have a lover , like almost no one is single and you get questioned on why you are single at the moment, people who just broke up can have someone immediately even just as some (the some-tada like soyou's song)

and all of this point is also my complaint in Kdrama, what a coincidence.

Happy Friday! How do you like new batch of dramas? I am just happy -now we have three serious?(and beautifully filmed) dramas - Beautiful mind, God of Noodles, Wanted. (What ratings?)
How did you like 'Wanted'? I felt like I was watching a movie. Here is what's said in their production press conference. [Sports Seoul, The Fact, Xsports News, OSEN]

EP Park Young-soo said this drama was different. "I think it will be the most realistic chase thriller among Korean dramas. It is different from other dramas in that it will create fear using the realistic events which you can encounter in your daily life, not some supernatural happenings."

Kim Ah-joong said she accepted the project because of the letter written at the end of the scenario by the writer. It said as a person who works in media area, he wondered if it is time to think hard how far current reality show will go. Kim said "I thought the writer was not just thinking about fun watch in genre-wise, his message was clear as to what story he wants to convey."

About watching point, she said "If the viewers watch the drama focusing on how the show plays reality out, how the viewers in the drama respond, and what mission the criminal demands, rather than trying to find the criminal, then show will be more interesting to watch.
About the plot doing a live reality show for an actress to find her son, Kim Ah-joong said "You know in reality you can't get a live broadcast to find her son because an actress's son is kidnapped, but I think it is an instrument to maximize the situation. We all feel real variety show is progressing toward to make it more strong and exciting, so I try to play the role thinking it is not flat out lie and understanding the situation."

She took on the first mother role since she debuted. "I wasn't sure I was the right fit for this role. I will just do my best. Jung Hae-in is the character who fell in despair because she lost her child, but she is not a person appealing to the viewers. This is the drama you don't watch being immersed in one character, but watch how all the characters behave and react as the third person's point of view. I think what is important is how we can process this event with rhythm, staying in the center of the event. The focal point is not how well Kim Ah-joong can play the motherly love in This drama." About her action scenes, she said "Since I play the mother who lost her child, there are scenes looking for her child while not caring about her body. It is not the action shown in big action movies, but there are desperate real realistic action scenes. I got beaten a lot and fell a lot. I have black and blue on my legs and where not shown. I showed director-nim to mean I was working this hard, but there was no particular response."

About Kim, EP Park said "I found that Kim Ah-joong ssi got tons of bruises on the set. Watching her digesting action scenes herself not using double, I believed she could express the...

I believed she could express the image of a mother who lost her child with her hardest."

Um Tae-woong(Resurrection) trusts KAJ. "I joined because I liked synopsis more than its genre. I am in because of good story. Also there is Kim Ah-joong who is queen of this genre (KAJ did Sign(2011) which got 25.5% ratings and Punch(2015) which got 14.8% and good review). I heard Kim Ah-joong got bruises so much filming on the set. I heard she did without using double. I think she grasped the mother role who lost her child perfectly. So please look forward to the show."

About variety PD Sin Dong-wook character he plays he said, "He is the person who works only to make fun program regardless of methods used. When I checked the synopsis first, I thought it did not make sense but as I read the story, it was so fun that I thought that(event) might be possible. If a parent lose their child, there is nothing they cannot do. So I could understand the situation, and I think the viewers will think that way too. Story is creative."

Ji Hyun-woo (Queen IH's man) said he's never done this genre. "It is first time for me to do this kind of genre. I think I am still at the age to experience various things and I am lacking in many areas. I am working hard to learn from the actors who are familar with this genre. I visit the police station to conduct the interviews and watch related shows to prepare to play my role well. Once I passed 30, I don't get offers for melo projects any more. The last three projects that I've taken are same way. That is not because I wanted, but because they were the ones offered to me. I think I should accept and it is important to face head-on and feel and learn for challenging something different."

Later in other TV show, UTW and JHW said they'd not thought about ratings promise and hesitated to answer. Kim Ah-joong said "if Ji Hyun-woo ssi sings, I will dance to his singing."

Other stuff:
Sad about Kim Sung-min who tried to kill himself. Do you remember him -He was great as YongGolDae, Qing general in Three Musketeers?

What's with all these bad news lately -Kim Min-hee(Love and Marriage, 2008) scandal after Park Yoo-chun stuff.

I watched Radio Star (latest ep 483) to get Music Commander(of 'King of Mask Singer') fix.
Ha Hyun-woo(=MC) seemed to have enough hardships in his life (including the time he performed in front of only chairs as audience).
He lives with his parents. I was glad to hear that because I read he was kicked out of his home after he quit college to pursue the music. Then again people teased him- what Rocker lives with his parents? (me:and a man in his mid 30's?)
His face belongs to 'Frog' team (on top of it is Park Hae-jin(CITT). heh)-
To me he looks like MC Yoo Jae-suk (cuter version), and remind of NamGoong Min when he talks. He is talkative, witty, weird? interesting.

and how amazing was it -his jaw was dislocated during his singing 'Don't worry'(ep 46 of KoMS, 2nd win) but kept singing.

Guess it's pretty much confirmed since Kim Min Hee hasn't even made any attempt to dispute or deny it.

Most of the comments criticising The Doctors keep saying "regardless of their sexes", but I'm sure that is not true.
I can't help imaginning the biking scene between a 27 year old female teacher and her 18 year old boy student having a crush on her. I'm sure most of the commenters would be just swooning and sighing over the handsome wide-eyed puppy love and just dismissing the teacher as naive and clueless and maybe criticise her a bit but not in such disgust.
Why can't a 27 year old male teacher be young and cluelss?
I feel here the real culprit is KRW's mature appearance and mannerisms, not the character nor the writing.
If we ignore the fact that they will have a loveline 13 years later and ignore the actual actors, and just focus on the present, the characters, and their ages, the student is a hotheaded 18 year old girl ready to fall for the first handsome man treating her as a human being, and the teacher is a 27 year old young man nearing the end of youth idealism but still cluelss about the real impact of his being kind and understanding to these girls.
Or perhaps I heve seen one too many cluless 27 year old boy in my lifetime ??

The reason they get huffy is the character of the lead is written as self aware and intelligent. He knows the students like him so it makes it extra squicky.

I think if the teacher was a female and the student male there would've been more criticism. Either ways its not really about the age difference but the teacher student relationship which should not take romance's form.

What bothers me about it mostly is the fact that the teacher seems so clueless and oblivious about how it looks to be spending all this time with one female student.

For some reason,

I understand what all of you are trying to say..

But i just can't see it..

His intents are not malicious..
E.g. Someone amongst us watching television... lets say 40 something.. and finds an idol or an actor who is 18 or less hot/pretty..

Does that make them pervy?

No.. right..
Here too.. KRW - ithink the character believes that overlooking and not addressing or not reacting to these crushes is what is best.. so ignores it for other girls..

PSH - he is definitely interested..and attracted.. but then as we see by end of ep 3, even his realization that it is attraction more than curiosity or non conflicting love for a student comes late.
So a) intent is not wrong b) he is attracted but even his realization comes in late c) he doesn't really do or intends to do anyhting that is inappropriate

Happy Friday Beanies! :)

Finally Seo In Guk is here!!!! *squees with delight* He's one of those men who can reduce me to a puddle of fangirling goo every time he shows up on screen LOL. Police Unit 38 is quite different from what I thought it'd be, but so good! I hope it gets high ratings and popularity, so far it really deserves that. Love that dry humor and real feel to it. The first episode was such a tease though, only letting us see glimpses of SIG right up till the final 15 mins or so *sigh* I felt so cheated lol.

Falling more and more in love with Lucky Romance which I really didn't expect. But Suho is not only seriously well-acted by oh-my-goodness-calm-down-with-the-charisma-before-you-kill-the-entire-female-population-RJY, he also happens to be the only character, on TV, in movies or in books that I have ever been able to identify so completely with. I LOVE how they portray him with a low EQ in the sense that it should often be understood (though that's not how EQ is intended), as in he doesn't understand social norms/doesn't follow them because they make no logical sense, yet he's still a sensitive, emotional and compassionate guy. Too often geniuses and people with high IQs and/or low EQs are portrayed as cold and without compassion, but not here, which is a pleasant surprise. Suho trying to understand Bo Nui's "stay healthy" comment via logic, having the "do not compute" reaction and then putting the pieces together once he has the right amount of information - I soooo get that. Mulling over little comments like that and not getting it until there are enough clues to get it logically... Been there... Many times... As well as not getting people's reactions when you state a non-personal matter in a logical way.
I hope we get more male leads, like Suho, who don't pull around women by the wrist, all tsundere-like. Here Bo Nui is in some ways the one with the upper hand and I love how he's like a lost puppy with his puppy-love lol, all innocent and cute :)

I started watching Healer. Don't get it. No connection with characters, plot or anything else and one of my pet peeves is flashbacks, which this show has in spades. So I don't think I'll finish it. When he held her against her will and CLIPPED HER NAILS, I just couldn't root for him anymore. That is sick. He needs help. And now she needs help, because he assaulted her and possibly traumatized her. NO WAY I'm gonna support a romance that starts out like that, no matter how funny it's meant to be.

Finally finished Entertainer. Not sure how I felt about the ending, but liked the show well enough overall. And Yeon Soo is LOVE. I hope Lee Tae Sun will make it big now, his and the kid's crying scene was just the most heartbreaking I've seen in a long time. And Gong Myong as Kyle was hilarious! When he handed out tissues for everyone - criiiinge.... Hope this'll be his break too, it seems the 5urprise members are all...

Re Healer...I was like you when I started Healer. You are still in the very early episodes of Healer so I wouldn't judge it yet. The Romance isn't like that at all...I didn't get hooked into Healer until 6th episode onwards. It wasn't until 8th episode that I understood the whole craze over this drama. I don't regret watching it. It's pretty addictive if you give it a chance! I still think Healer is much better than Descendants of the Sun in terms of plot/story. Hopefully you can give it a second chance before dropping it :)

But give more try, since many people said it's their best drama of all time even if they got hook in ep 4,6 even 10. Probably because of the male lead

b) plot wise meh.. i think primarily it is all about the lead guy..

watch for eye candy's, overall drama ain't bad..but not great .. anything more than that..not really

You have to be in the right mood for Healer. It's something about the combination of the leads being so open with each other and the music. I actually ended up mostly skipping out on the action and letting the scenes where you get exploration of the leads (plus Ahjumma is awesome). I will never forget the music cue though. It was really well done. I still get chills when I hear it.

@mimi, I wasn't fond of DotS either, so pretty much anything will be better than that plot imo ha ^^ I did hear that it gets better, by ep 8 or so, just don't know if I have the patience for another 5 ep like this, especially if I end up not liking it after that either. I normally give a drama a lot of chances, but I'm not really seeing anything I can latch unto to keep me going. I think it's mostly just a matter of taste here though.

@Inisfree, Good to know I'm not the only one underwhelmed by it (:

@Oshi, I usually love these kind of stories, characters like Green Arrow and Transporter are ones I usually love and Healer seems to be of the same type, yet I'm just not feeling it. I do love when leads are very open with each other though, which is so rare, so I'm a little more intrigued now. I did consider just skipping through the series only watching character-development scenes, but I don't know if I want to bother right now.

DOTS = Kitchen Sink Plot.

Healer was the first Kdrama that I made sure to get home to watch "live" like it was one of my American TV obsessions.

Kim Eun Sook loves kitchen sinks.... I wonder if she ever uses the rest of her kitchen... Or maybe there is no rest? *gasp* Maybe it's all sinks? Maybe she bought a dozen sinks instead of fridge, oven and cabinets??

0

How does she cook dinner then? Does she just eat out?

Perhaps this is a sign of some deep-seated traumatic occurrence in a past life. A sink fell through a ceiling and crushed a lover. She slipped and fell headfirst into a sink and was strangled by her scarf in a garbage disposal. A sink was melted and poured over her head by her conquering enemies after she slighted them. She was slain by a sink during mortal kungfu style combat when her opponent picked the sink up and smashed it over her head...

0

She only buys food she can wash. In her sinks. While stroking them and calling them "My precious" (in Gollum-accent of course).

Any one of those sound plausible since it's KES. I especially admire the one with the scarf in the garbage disposal. Does it mean that she's now actually her ghost? Cause, y'know, strangled and all, it's pretty hard to go on living.

Maybe she associates sinks with her childhood friend who used to live in a junkyard and decorated his room with broken sinks. She thinks he died, but he's actually alive, but has amnesia and she's never had a boyfriend because unconsciously she waits for him?

0

Oh wait, we're talking past lives here... But does that mean she's actually from the future? Garbage disposals are a pretty new invention...

0

Clearly KES is now a time-traveling scribe from a future where there are no sinks.

0

That must be it! We finally cracked it. Whew. The enigma has been solved! I can now go on living.

0

*dying* thanks for this you two!

0

I, who barely has time to comment today, had to make an exception to say...this conversation is beautiful.

About Entertainer, PD of the show said the two plots he put the most effort was Yeon-soo and his son case, and Hyung's stolen song case. It is good that they were the best parts in the show. Wish they had that earlier -shy we spent most time on rape/not so rape stuff.

I could really feel he put a lof of effort into YS and Chan Hee's story and it's so great to finally see a plot like that in a kdrama. I hope it means dramaland is going to start being more bold when it comes to single parents, as they usually face a lot of prejudices and hardships in South Korea. I was so happy to see a non-widowed/non-divorced young single parent character :)

Re the fake-rape case, I think it was fine and also a bit bold, but I did find it weird that the plot suddenly veered off into something completely different and so annoying that the perps didn't face justice. Forgiveness does not mean that people shouldn't face consequences. What if they did something similar again, since they pretty much got away with it?

My love for Healer started at the end of Episode 5 with Healer's sly smile towards the h. Healer was like a proud papa that just knew that the h would come through with flying colors and was so happy when she proved him correct. One of my all-time favorite k-drama images.

I enjoyed first episodes of Police unit 38. Here is Question and Answer session with the writer Han Jung-hoon who also wrote 'Vampire prosecutor 1' and 2 and 'Bad Guys'. [OSEN] Scripts of PU38 is completed up to episode 10 (so it is half pre-production) and PD Hang Dong-hwa and actor Ma Dong-suk from 'Bad Guys' also joined him in this show.

Q: You made issues with every drama you've written by using fresh plots. How do you think of those plots?
A: I am trying to imagine fun things, rather than thinking within the box. Of course I am not doing this alone. For PU38, CP Park Ho-sik made first suggestion saying 'Let's make a story about a conman scamming to collect tax'. Since then I kept having meeting with CP Park Ho-sik, director Han Dong-hwa and PD Hwang Jun-hwuk, and polished the ideas. What I want to say is that drama topic does not come out only from the writer's head. It comes out from discussion among many creators, that way I think a topic reflecting refreshing and popular ideas can be created.

Q:What could be different in this show from 'Bad Guys'?
A: The biggest difference is drama's 'Tone'. The thing I've heard the most after 'Bad Guys' was that 'I didn't watch because it was too cruel.', 'It was scary.' So in this show, I tried to embrace those viewers who didn't watch 'Bad guys' because of that. I added more comedy and cheerfulness and focused on 'conning' rather than murder or violence.
Q: What is the reason casting the actor Ma Dong-suk?
A: I don't think there is any writer who doesn't want to work with the actor Ma Dong-suk. From the planning stage, we've talked about Park Sung-il character a lot and reflected his idea on the script. Rather than we cast Ma Dong-suk ssi, it is more accurate to say that we made PU38 together with Ma Dong-suk ssi. That is the way Paek Sung-il character was formulated whom nobody can portray other than Ma Dong-suk ssi.

Q: Who is the character you favor the most?
A: All has own meaning so it is hard to pick one. I love them all.
Q: To be able to describe a story about collecting tax using scam, you must have knowledge about various cases first. How did you prepare?
A: I took real scam related material which actually occurred in Korea and dramatized them. If characters pull so called 'buttery con' (Too smooth?), it lacks reality. I think you will find you've seen the cases (dealt in drama) in newspaper-they are various kinds of scam which hit Korean society.
Q: I heard you actually seeked the consultation from 'Police unit 38'. Did you?

0
11
reply

Required fields are marked *

A: To research the collection method in detail, we investigated The tax collection bureau at Seoul city hall for about 3 months. If we didn't have consultation from tax agents, I don't think there could be the drama 'PU38'. The people working in the tax collection bureau at Seoul city hall, and all tax agents in the nation are people who are really working hard behind. In the drama, there are corrupt agents in the collection bureau, and civil servants who join hands with tax evaders, but I hope you understand this is only the setting to make the drama fun. Just like there are corrupted police officers in a drama where a police officer is the lead. From what I've observed for a short period, tax agents are the people who work day and night to accomplish the equality and fairness. I hope people remember that is reality.

Q: What was difficult or cautious dealing with scam, tax, etc.
A: I am sure there are people who were actually conned. Also there could be people who were conned by the methods described in the show. I hope this is not the drama to rub salt to their injury, and give another pain. That is why we used the con cases which actually happened. Once you know that is scam, you can prevent. I hope the drama help viewers to realize many conning methods and help to prevent the crime.

Q: What is the show's difference or strength compared to other dramas?
A: I think 'feel-great con drama' is different from other dramas. The feel-great con drama which relieves the anger/frustration for people is the difference and strength of our drama.
Q: You do lots of OCN projects.
A: It is the channel I debuted so I feel attached. Working with people I like is the most important for me, so that could be the reason I keep doing OCN projects.
Q: Is there any messages to convey to the viewers through the 'Police unit 38'?
A: At the end of the day, the show is story about money. 'Why we are obsessed with money', 'Why we hurt each other because of money', 'Can we ever feel free from money' -I wanted to talk about those things, because this is the world belief system(value) is more important than money.

The level of violence that the premise suggests with murders etc, it really wasn't..

they would fight like any other action scenes..

and most of it was implicit

Infact before starting, i heard so much abt the serial killer trait..but hardly anything was shown..all was implicit..

not gory, not dark..was actually bit of action served with spices

SQUAD 38: Honestly, this drama took me by surprise. I expected it to be a fun, action-packed drama with witty banter. But the tone of the first two episode is more somber and depressing that what I thought it would be. Though it also help grounding the character to the dire reality that money do rule the world and make their struggle more palpable. That being said, who else shaking head at the fact that here is another person's life totally ruined because of similar name? Poor Baek Sung-il.. Now that he finally turn to the most unlikely person for help, I think we'll get our fun this week. I'm so ready for the full team to assemble.

OHYA: I don't know whether you know this guys, but people started going crazy about the graffiti on the wall in the last scene of ep 16. It's read "THIS IS NOT REAL" and I don't know whether that's intentional or not. But I don't believe this team would make such a big mistake like that. Now I don't know what to believe anymore. I don't know whether the doctor is the only imaginative part or there are more scenes that only happened in Dokyung's mind. Like all that event when he actively tried to change what happened in his vision, for instance.. Writer-nim, just give us happy ending please. I don't care whether this is all real or not, just give us happy ending please...

I actually think the show did a service by grounding it in a more somber tone. It gives the characters reason and life to have a core motivation. Once you are able to reach that sense of purpose you can have fun the rest fo the way and never lose sense of it. Otherwise the show becomes so bubbly you barely care about it and we just watch SIG give us wet dreams.

I completely agree! I mean, I wouldn't have REALLY minded if it was all slick, zippy, and fun the whole way through, I would have enjoyed that, but if there is emotional payoff in the end then I will enjoy it even more. I'm looking forward to seeing how this drama goes. I'm sure it will still be slick, zippy, and fun, just with more emotional heft.

Oh Hae Young Again and I absolutely love it! Can't get enough of this drama, I'm trying to catch up to watch the final episodes with everyone else this upcoming week but I've only watched the first 6 ep thus far. So lots of marathoning this weekend!

Also watching:
You're Beautiful - good Lord is Jang Geun Suk a pretty dude, love his pouty face and I never thought I'd be so attracted to a guy who wears guyliner lol, anyway I'm loving this one as well (lots of laughs) and pretty good music

Rewatching:

Hey guys! I've been watching quite a lot of dramas this week so let's dive in!

Oh Hae-young Again: Ah, my love for you has waned but I'm still enjoying it well enough. I can't believe the last two episodes are almost here!

Doctors: Watched the first two episodes but I'm unsure if I will continue. I found it find but it didn't really grab me.

Police Unit 38: LOVIN' IT. I was so excited for this one and it didn't disappoint. They spent a biiit to long on set-up but I'm hoping next week when the team is assembled things will get even more fun. I'm hoping Sooyoung's character gets more to do. I think she will since she is 3rd billing after all. Looking forward to seeing what she can do! Also, Seo In-gook is hot.

Best Love: Finally finished this one. I liked it but wasn't as in love with it as other people seem to be, to be honest. And I actually wasn't that impressed with Gong Hyo-jin's acting in this one.

Boys Over Flowers: Okay, this deserves some explanation. I have never watched BOF. I HAVE watched Hana Yori Dango and greatly enjoyed it, mostly because I loved Makino Tsukushi. I've never wanted to watch BOF because I heard it sucks and the female lead is terrible. However, I felt that as a drama fan I at least had to watch the first episode. And I watched it with Javabeans and Girlfriday's Mystery Drama Theater 3000 commentary, haha. I can't go on. Mostly because it was only entertaining to me because of the commentary and I think if I had to watch this drama alone I would bash my head in. So maybe I can watch it with friends at some point and we can all make fun of it together.

Goong: Fun fact, this was my very first K-Drama. I never finished it and decided to watch it with a fresh perspective. Surprisingly, two episodes in, I'm enjoying it. At the very least, if I get tired of the actual storyline I can just focus on the pretty sets, scenery, and music, haha.

Joseon X-Files: Only watched one episode so far. I liked it but I'm not completely hooked. We'll see if I continue.

The Memorandum of Kyoko Okitegami: I started AND finished this one and loved it! I really hope there is a season 2 so we can find out who she ACTUALLY is, lol. Aragaki Yui isn't the greatest actress but she is so dang likable. Her characters are all cue but still totally different. She knows how to work her charms and make her characters enjoyable, which I can totally respect.

Considering checking out Beautiful Mind since I've heard many good things about it.

I hate how BOF is often the gateway drama because it makes lots of people think that all dramas are like that when they aren't! People have so many preconceived notions about dramas because of the crazy ones like BOF. They don't seem to understand that there are many dramas with real merit out there. Of course, consuming entertainment just to be entertained is not a bad thing, but I still hate all the stereotypes. Lots are stereotypes for a reason, but BOF is like ALL the stereotypes thrown into one drama and turned to MAX.

"... BOF is like ALL the stereotypes thrown into one drama and turned to MAX."

LOL this is the perfect description for BOF, nothing else needed.

It took me THREE tries to just get through the first episode. Then there were a few times in the beginning when I thought it was fun, despite the amount of nonsensical plotturns and headdesk moments. But then rather quickly it ended up being all about Kim Bum for me lol. The last quarter I fastforwarded through all the other scenes...

What are those commentaries you mentioned? I only read the recaps while watching :)

Just for the first episode JB and GF did a "Mystery Drama Theater 3000" and it was hilarious. You just play the audio and the episode at the same time and listen to them tear the drama to shreds LOL.

http://www.dramabeans.com/2013/04/mystery-drama-theater-3000-boys-before-flowers/

They've only done Mystery Drama Theater 3000 two other times (for K-pop Ultimate Survival and Neukkim) but I wish they brought it back! I love reading the recaps and listening to podcasts, but hearing their reactions and commentaries as you are watching an episode is even better, haha.

Tbh the reason BOF is crack to many is probably because it is so crazy, but I can't deal with it lol. When I said I was gonna start it a follower on tumblr told me to just go through ep 4 and "if gu jun pyo has amnesia, you’ve gone way too far and your computer is probably infected with way-too-much-melodrama-for-even-a-kdrama-itis". But I couldn't even get any further than episode 1.

0

Oooh thanks! I'm so gonna listen to that! The torture of watching BOF ep 1 again will probably be worth it!

I'd been wanting to give the hot mess that is KPop Ultimate Audition a second watch, since I found out that one of the actors is Song Sehyun, who happens to be Seunghyun of FT Island's little brother (which is crazy, cause he looks so much older than him lol). And now I'm most definitely gonna try watching at least ep 1 again!

Ha, love that tumblr-followers comment. That amnesia was ridiculous. And yes, if you make it that far, there's no telling what it might do to your computer, or worse, your brain function...

0

I dunno I kinda feel like BoF is almost a rite of passage, like it's the drama that pulls you in, gives you a taste of the drama crack factor, and then you're thru with it and Googling "BOF Season 2" and questioning your life choices but then you find Coffee Prince or MNIKSS and suddenly you're overwhelmed with choices and now you get to watch Miseang or Signal or SFD or romcom or whatever floats your boat, but you're in man, you're in and you have BoF to thank for it.

Lol my gateway drama-drug was Coffee Prince. Then some of the "must-see"s like Secret Garden and You're Beautiful and then I stumbled upon MLFTS and IRY (yeah, it's not been that long) and that was it. I'll forever be searching for a new Coffee Prince, MLFTS and IRY. Only watched BOF a few months ago. Regret it/Don't regret it, because now I at least can call myself a proper drama addict who knows what other people are talking about ha.

0

BOF was the drama that got me into Kdramas but it wasn't actually the drama itself that pulled me in. It was just the drama that introduced me to dramabeans and that discovery ended up ruining my life.

0

My first K-Drama was Goong but I didn't finish it. I gave up on K-Dramas for three years after that and only watched J-Dramas. I finally gave You're Beautiful a try and thought it was hilarious so I kept watching and eventually stumbled upon the really good stuff. I thank my J-Drama watching experience for giving me higher expectations so that when I got around to K-Dramas I mostly knew what I liked and disliked and could avoid the messes.

I do have to admit, though: my very first Asian drama was It Started With A Kiss when I was in 7th grade. It is terrible but I somehow loved it and cried like a baby in some scenes, lol, even though it was so overacted.

I don't think I have one drama to thank for pulling me in because I was a fan of Asian music before then which resulted in me watching dramas that my favorite singers and idols were in. It was a very gradual transition from "I'll watch what my faves are in" to becoming an actual fan of the dramas themselves.

0

I agree. You've just described my entire kdrama journey. It all begun with BOF and surprisingly I did not mind any of those kdrama cliches at all because they were so new to me. Perhaps, now I might not be able to see the drama again after watching better shows.

0

BOF was one of the early dramas for me, and it kind of solidified every known cliche known to k-dramas in my mind. One of those shows that was not too bad at the time, but a year or so later you wonder why you bothered.

Oh my, you and Asmara are a die hard fan of SIG indeed.
I adore him too since his 1st album, but... well, I'm easily side tracked by other actors too. So typical me.. *LOL*

Oh, I'm so gonna mention SIG in every open thread too! The guy is beyond words... How he can act, sing and look like that all at once.... I'm pretty sure it should be illegal....

We should have like a motto or something, like all those Kpop fandoms. Maybe we should steal BTS fandom's (Army's?) saying and change it to "Once you Seo In, you never Seo Out"? No? Not working?

*pouts*

Oh well... I'll thinking of something yet! ;)

I love how obsessed we all are with SIG. Every thread that mentions him is filled with the thirstiest comments ever LOL. Just goes to show how attractive someone's natural charms and good acting can be. I mean, of course he's good-looking, but not any more than the next Korean actor.

But man, it's that charisma that elevates him to a new level of attractiveness.

I know and it's not even necessarily the ones that are usually fangirling lol. Charisma, talent and personality always trumpfs looks. At least for me lol. I didn't find SIG or RJY attractive at all, but after watching them act, I got completely hooked lol.

0

He's still my personal favorite of the Answer Me crowd. And that's saying something considering how much love I have for Jung Eun-ji, PBG, RJY, YYS, etc. ;) Such a cheeky bastard! Who can resist?

Jimin seems like a sweetie, so he probably wouldn't. Not so sure about Army though. Some of them seem pretty fierce. Like they're the Special Forces division of Army and got real army training for it.

I know, it does sound kind of odd, yet I can't put my finger on why *strokes (thankfully) imaginary beard*

0

Well as an ARMY/beanie, I'll declare it allowed.

Although as a multi-fandom, I don't remember it actually coming from ARMY but some older idol with an "in/인" but idk who.

0

Whew, happy to know I've got Army stamp on it now!

Hmm, interesting. I'm trying to think of an older idol with "in", which I thought would be easy as I love 2nd gen idols in variety, but can't think of a single one. 1st gen maybe? Don't really know more than a few names from that...

0

Oh wait! Kangin, maybe?

0

Omo! I think it is Kangin. Thank you. It's been bugging me forever!

ARMY is extremely protective, unfortunately. But most of us are somewhat calmer and simply fans of the same 7 boys.

0

Yay, glad I could help then!

Yes fortunately there are many, many nice BTS fans :) It's just that the extreme/crazy ones can be a little scary, seeing as they're, well.... crazy. LOL
Thank goodness I'm not a KPop idol! Even the really, really calm fandoms of groups like SuJu and FTI have some fans who get mad if they as much as take a picture with a woman. Like, what... Why...? Cannot. Compute.

But yes, the majority of KPop fans are nice, calm people. It's probably just that there are so many KPop fans of some groups and the crazy ones are the loudest, so they're more noticeable.

0

Those 7 kids are precious. And I feel like a mama. But not too crazy, hopefully. Haha..

But yeah, completely agree about scary kpop fans. I don't think it's healthy for kpop idols to completely give up having a love life. Just because of some crazy fans.

Sure, I'd be sad if any of my kids got a girl. But birds gotta leave the nest. I'd be waving them off with a hankie..with tears in my eyes..feeling proud and sad..LOL..I'm being so dramatic!

0

I heard a lot about this crazy fan culture, where idols/actors can't act..

Can someone explain this?
What is this phenomenon?

As in, they date and people stop watching their drama?
Then how come, we have all these actors and their agencies confirming their dating news

Thanks for letting me know :)

0

I haven't watched Doctors too, I only saw Ji Soo scene in the club (and maybe replayed it for 5 times) and it is enough to make me squee. This is perhaps Jisoo's favorite character for me.

0

Ok people let me just put this out there.

HOW HAS NO ONE MENTIONED 1N2D!!!

They did some awesome lecture time on the show and I practically died when YSY was up there. The cars metaphor had me in tears. I know it's terribly cheesy but god damn these people. How did a variety show make me tear up!!!! I can't wait to hear the rest of the lectures. I hope whoever wins dinner picks something nice.

PU38:
Everything I expected though honestly hasn't quite dug in it. SIG.....the only person to make me fan girl. If he goes to the military I may die.

I've otherwise kept my kdrama intake light. I'm trying to find something to invest in without getting to caught. OHYA pretty much wrecked me with the commentary from randos.

I'm loving this Ehwa trip for 1N2D! The lectures so far were so heartfelt and genuine and I can't wait for the next ones either. JJY talking about his dating experience LOL, of course that's what he'll choose as a topic... I found it so hilarious how all the girls were fawning over him and YSY and they both looked soooooo happy haha. JJY looked all smug, it made me practically roar with laughter. His poor mentor looked kind of sour at the lack of attention.

LOL! SIG is also one of the only ones who can make me fangirl. He goes to the military this year as far as I know :(

1N2D is da bomb like i can't even believe this season is so freaking good T__T

Donggu honestly surprised me with his very eloquent and funny lectures. It hits close to my (and i believe many other people) situation as well. He really did good. And not to mention Defcon & Jongmin too!! Defcon is just adorable and encouraging while Jongmin is so heartwarming and sincere. Hearing Jongmin's reminds me how words can really hurt, i can't believe people have said horrible things to this adorable fool :(

Expect even higher rating this sunday for 1n2d hihi XD

I think it's gotten even better after YSY joined. It hit a certain point where it was slightly less amusing, but now the average age is lower it's gotten so energetic and fun again :)

Jongmin's lecture was pretty sad. He almost made me cry. Poor guy. The "always the bridesmaid, never the bride"-feeling probably isn't very fun. Still, in some way he's the backbone of the show, he's been there since day 1 and that means a lot. He always provide a lot of laughs, usually "sacrificing" himself for it. And people not only recognize him, but love him. I hope he realizes that.

Well, here is the continuing saga of a Korean Drama cartoonist. My editor at DramaFever (where they fired me) called to explain that with the Warner Brothers buyout, tons of people were canned. So now, I am still tooning, but not getting paid. It will all work out.

Beautiful Mind with ♥Jang Hyuk – did you see that Jeet Kune Do move when he stopped the guy with the scalpel in the hallway? So happy to see loveable Yoon Hyun-Min in a strong role (our poor, poor Soo from Heartless City), and also liking Park So-Dam and Park Se-Young as female leads.

Another Miss Oh – I’m pretty sure the one driving the car towards Do Kyung in his flash-forward isn’t Ha Tae Jin, it’s Oh Hae Young’s mother. This is the biggest cast of flawed characters in a long time who keep tripping over the tangled plot lines and falling on top each other like a football tackle pile-up. Some mistakes might be too big to fix. Oh Hae Young two – ha!

Doctors – the first two episodes were intriguing enough to give it a chance. Hye Jung (Park Shin-Hye) is saucy but smart; I like her character development already.

Beautiful Gong Shim – bromance standoff – yay! The bald spot gone daydream, thought of you, superfox~

Master God of Noodles – *spoiler* heavy as barbells, the thing that is hard to stay with is the intense revenge and devotion to it by so many people who insist on going it alone for far too long. So, does Kim Gil Do think the former personal assistant who is going to testify against him is dead (since he had his goons cart him off to presumably dispose of him)? I wonder if Dokku saved his life and is now calling up the favor? Somebody stop this psychopath whose talent is ruining people, please!

Yoon Shi Yoon was adorable on Guerrilla Date (Entertainment Weekly). He’s charming on 1N2D even if he isn’t much for sports. Not to mention his dynamic role in Mirror of the Witch, a truly spellbinding drama, but thank goodness for the recaps cuz there are so many complicated royalty issues ~

I haven't stopped by OT for a while, good to read up on beanies and more. Sunny weekend! \/

It's moving week and I have no internet now! Plus, my mother has DIALUP so next week is going to suck. There may be trips to the Starbucks 20 miles away just to get my hit of the digital information superhighway.

Today is officially Mulligan Friday after I failed to move out yesterday because Movers cancelled and Amtrak cancelled my train out of NYC because of flooding in Maryland, so I am attempting to do everything that ought to have been done yesterday today so I can get on a train tomorrow. Sigh.

What I've been watching:
* OHYA - My love for Sookyung and JinSang has surpassed my love of OHY and PDK. I like OHY alone more than I like her with PDK.

*MOTW - More magical shenanigans, please. This show is very pretty. The color palette and overall production design are very nicely done. I want the Princess to turn into a BAMF (Yes, that means what you want it to mean).

* Squad 38 - I'm digging the first two episodes and hopefully it carries on nicely.

* Doctors - I wonder why so many kdramas insist on the 3-4 episodes of backstory before getting into the real story? For 90% of stories (kdrama or otherwise), you can start the story in media res, chop the first section, and then filter in the details as needed later on. Healer did this through well placed flashbacks. Side note: I am enjoying snotty PSH in this role, which is a big change for her from previous dramas where she's generally been as bland as milquetoast.

American Shows:
* Orphan Black - Season finale. I love that the protagonist is her own antagonist in this series. #CloneClub4Life

* Thrones - HOW ABOUT THAT BATTLE? #VoteSansa PSA: Feed Yo Dogs.

* NBA Draft (Can we talk about sports on DB?)- Thibs shoulda given anything the Bulls anything they wanted for Jimmy Butler, including the dang mascot if that's what they so wanted, except Towns and Wiggins. No clue what Orlando is doing, but OKC just fleeced them with a lopsided deal for an overpaid, aging slightly above average starter who is redundant with your best young talent...Nice moves by the Suns. I'm high on anyone whose name is Dragan.

Finally the weekend! I'm looking forward to the atomic bomb falling on the Love Square on Five Kids this weekend (two female cousins and 2 brothers are in interlocking love triangles with each other and they're just now figuring who's who out). I thought the bomb would hit all at once but nooooo they let Sung Hoon's poor character find everything out in advance and now he's having a nervous breakdown. Bonus, his commercial endorsement deal's marketing dept is lead by his girlfriend's older brother so instead of being a demanding star he's suddenly flipped into "yes sir think you sir" mode. I'm dying just thinking about it.

More comedy will ensue from Beautiful Gong Shim, and action and thrills from Mirror of the Witch.

Finished watching 'Yutori desuga Nanika?'. I like the cast very much. I love how Akane(Masakazu's GF) handled with their crisis in the last eps. Each of them has character flaws yet I cannot hate them at all because they are trying hard to strive in their lives. I hope there will be a good sub.

marathoned ' Good Morning Call'. The drama is based on the same titled manga. This is a typical cliche rom- com in Japanese style. That means that the main girl is sweet, enduring and sometimes silly, the main boy is super in everything and he is a cool headed (often cold and abrasive) person. So the setting is nothing special once you get used to watch Asian school rom-com. The things that bothered me is that when the main girl is supposedly an average looking girl but in fact the actress is very pretty while the the lead male is supposedly a very handsome man yet the actor is above average,,,, that's just not so convincing to me.
The young actress and the tempo of the drama made this drama quite charming and I ended up marathoning the entire 16 eps over three days.

I finished' watashi Kekkon dekinai,,,'( It's not that I cannot marry but I choose not to marry). The pair is so good! I love the main guy's motto written in calligraphy because his calligraphy is so bald and the wording for his each lesson( motto or slogan?) is on point. I enjoyed the changing process of a woman nearing 40 from a desperate woman to get married to a woman who realized that she actually has choices in her future. I love how the enemies at first turned into comrades then something else in the end.
The actor who played the main lead's first love is actually a comedian... maybe that is why he was not convincing to me as a good honest elite businessman.( or just he is lacking an experience as an actor?) However, I like the young actor( Kentaro) who played the businessman when he was in high school. He was also in the Good Morning Call as a ramen chef.( I actually like the actor more than the main actor in GMC) I get a feeling Ken Taro might be on the way to be a popular actor in near future somehow. ( I like his big mongoloid eyes.)

Isn't it funny when shows try to pass off one person as average/plain or even unattractive when they're totally attractive and vice-versa? I'm watching Goong right now and they keep going on about how Yoon Eun-hye's character is plain (which is crazy, YEH is so pretty) and how Joo Ji-hoon is so handsome when I don't find him that attractive.

I think it's hard for any drama to pass an actress off as unattractive though because they're almost always wearing makeup, even when they're asleep LOL (which no beauty-conscious woman would ever do because it's so bad for your skin). That and the entertainment industry is pretty much built on looks so even an "average" actor would be considered attractive if you ran into them in everyday life.

But I guess that's just one of the instances where you have to suspend your disbelief.

Oh Friday! How I love thee <3

It is such a beautiful day here that even walking in dog poop failed to wipe the silly smile off my face. ("walk" I skipped into it like it was 1890).
Anyways...

This week was great in dramaland! I got to start a whole bunch of new dramas and it felt like Christmas ^^

Police Squad 38: Ohhh Seo Inguk was born for this kind of role. And Ma Dongsuk!! Can't wait for next week now that the set-up is done. I really want to know how Inguk's character and Sooyoung's character know each other. He was totally the one who scammed her.

Doctors: I enjoyed the first 2 episodes so much more than I thought I would. I am intrigued to see where the story goes and hopefully the problematic teacher/student relationship will be dealt with well. Also, Park Shinhye is actually amazing in this role. I've liked her in Pinocchio, Flower Boy Next Door and yes even Heirs (*ducks for cover*) but this is a different level.

Wanted: Love the premise and the social criticism explored about variety shows/reality shows but there's something about the execution that is leaving me cold... I am still intrigued to see what will happen next because ep2 ending was WTF?
Also, is it only me or is the production team (in the story) not doing their jobs. Aren't they suppose to be filming her trying to find her son? Why are they just sitting around trying to write a script while she goes through all the crime solving excitement...

sdhfjkshgkjdhgdgkdhfsdhfkd LUCKY ROMANCE dfgdjgaghihg JE SUHO eifhdjfhgjdfkhglshlgh RYU JUNYEOL hddfhgkfdjhgk

Tree with Deep Roots : I am such a nerd for hangul. King Sejong is officially my favourite king...never thought I would be fangirling over a historical figure...

Finally
Almost done the jdrama N no Tame Ni and Wow! It is amazing! I am counting the hours until I can go back home and watch the last two episodes!!

I am debating whether I should watch the jdrama Rich Man Poor Woman or the twdrama Devil Beside You next. Any thoughts?

Happy Friday! (also commiserations to any British beanies, those vankers in the Leave campaign deserve nothing good)

I'm not vatching anything atm but I did test out the first episode of Police Unit 38, and it's really promising so far. I hope this drama does justice to its cast.

also vatched ep 1 of Beautiful Mind and it is VERY packed.... the acting is great but somehov medical dramas are just not my cup of tea.

I'm just very disinclined to actually vatch dramas these days, none of the neu or upcoming lot interest me. Been reading books instead - I finished Kindred by Octavia Butler last veek and I'm currently reading The Vee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. It is absolutely glorious btv, considering the main protagonists are a nine-year-old girl and a pack of six-inch-high blue men vith a penchant for stealing, drinking, fighting and svearing. (They like to say 'crivens!').

A fellow Pratchett fan!! *waves and jumps excitedly*
I LOVE his books. I started with The Fifth Elephant, and that was the beginning of my love affair. His humour and wit is amazing. His passing is really a loss to mankind. ?
Have not read The Wee Free Men yet but now I'm determined to find it in my local library and start soon!

So many dramas this season are using Mugyo, though I kinda wish they did a bit more of an even hand towards it in Mirror of the Witch.

Lucky Romance is using some of it in the "superstitions". though superstitions are religious belief that wider people don't accept. The Talisman, for example...

Mirror of the Witch used Mugyo in the shamaness... though they didn't translate it. I kinda wish, though they didn't make the main evil Musin, since what she's doing is against the religion.

Another Oh Hae Yeong is using it in explaining how the magic system works. Particularly how time works and the way it talks about death and acceptance is very Mugyo. =P I don't think DK is Baksu though...

Other recent dramas have also used it in a positive way, such as Oh My Ghostess.

Beyond that, I'm still hoping for better representation of QUILTBAG in Korean dramas. (Sexuality/Sexual orientation, biosex and gender spectrum). I had high hopes in Lucky Romance that he was demisexual... he's consistently shown lack of sexual attraction, though he's shown mental, physical and emotional attraction from the first, he's not shown sexual or romantic attraction until later in the show. He also flat out stated he can't do one night stands and that's other people not him, to the point his friend mocked him.

I was also hoping they'd clinch mild Aspergers. He'd be the perfect writing to do both diversities. Why are my fellow Koreans so cowardly? I want bisexual main characters too...

Oh and anyone watching Love At Seventeen (TW drama)? Despite the heavy use of tropes, I really like it. The MMC is so likable because he's sooo intensely following lines of consent it's making me melt. Even if it makes him trip up, even if it makes him not get to his goal faster, he still 100% always goes for consent and we need that more in our male leads. It's also making me go gaga...

It's a bit difficult to explain why it's so addicting, because on the surface explanation it looks like every other drama, but it's really well scripted and acted. I have a feeling that people who liked Another Oh Hae Yeong will also like this drama.

I've been going back and forth on the drama (I hate the dubbing they do in T/C dramas to make the mandarin sound good) but I think I'll give it a try thanks to your rec.

This one isn't so heavily dubbed. You can hear the echoes occasionally and background noise... which shows their sound equipment isn't always good, but I kinda like it that way.

C-dramas tend to be more heavily dubbed overall.

There is heavy use of tropes, but they are well handled.... more than usual, and you can see them a mile coming, so it's not like the makjang in Korean dramas. The feel and tone is similar to Another Oh Hae Yeong in a lot of ways. The longing, the quiet moments, nostalgia, etc.

I can't believe I'm posting again on an Open Thread! It was a special holiday here and I had no work. I have finally caught up with Lucky Romance and boy I'm a goner. The plot is may not be the best there is but the drama makes me feel good and warm, and that makes happy. And also Ryu Jun-yeol is totally stealing my heart.

38 Task Force is on my to watch list. I'm excited to see Seo In-guk in action again especially, correct me if I'm wrong, it's his last project before he enlist :'(

Sadly though, I'm still not finished with She Was Pretty, Signal, and One More Happy Ending. I was planning on marathoning Signal but I'm not sure if my heart can handle the possible emotional roller coaster I might go through. I'm trying to avoid heavy dramas but can someone just reassure me that I will feel happy and satisfied with the finale (without spoilers please).

Hoping I could squeeze more drama watching to my schedule after this long break! See you soon beanies!

So UK voted Brexit!
*sigh* not sure what the aftermath would be-methinks the science and economy are going to be hit.Fingers crossed for Britain to be strong!

Drama front

OHYA: Somehow wish the 2 episode extend didn't happen. Watching the show solely because Seo hye Jin

Gong-Shim: Asssa..still doing good. May I say that NamGoong Min keeps me amazed with his acting. He is awesome in his role <3 .But hope the angst doesn't last and the cute comes back soon

MoTW: Fantasy done right! I am glad they do not emphasize too much on the romance.Hopefully it will remain so. Excellent show (This was what I had hoped Nightwatchman would be*gives a stink eye*) with a well written ,straightforward and a coherent story.

Return of Baek Hee: Surprising little show.Well acted by all.Plenty of heart. Enjoyed it immensely inspite of over the top antics.

The promise: Dropped. Even Yuri and pretty dresses (not that we have any now) won't bring me back to this show. I should go invest this time to go have a nice , refreshing, nap!

Enjoy the weekend folks <3

Aaargh..it's going to rain again and I have forgotten to bring my umbrella :(

Very big news. I was surprised Britain actually voted Leave (although early results already indicated as much). The funny thing is, Cornwall is already worried about repercussions even though it voted to leave. I really wonder if those who voted for Brexit actually thought through the consequences carefully.

I don't think they did. Most of them were just upset about the refugees problem, but leaving the EU because of that? I seriously don't know what people are thinking. It's like nobody thinks it's a big deal that they'll need to renegotiate every single trade deal, the repercussions to companies and the stock market, and the value of the pound falling meaning more expensive imports. Damned! I thought this will never happen and the leave notion gaining traction was just... well... that they took too small a sample size to be representative of the vote.

Nostalgia does strange (and sometimes dangerous) things to people. A lot of the Leave voters probably didn't do enough research or didn't have a lot of relevant information at hand. They also didn't think long-term. The Leave campaign seemed to be quite vicious and easily preyed on the fears of this group of people.

On the economic front: There's a run on US Treasury bills (the world is coming to buy US debt on account of the down swing of every single market across the globe) and their yield is now the lowest since The Great Depression.

Personally, I'd say this is a good time to buy good stocks cheap. But then I'm not one to see if the sky is actually falling. Markets hate uncertainty. Just wait until November 2016!

Volatility in the market will be sky high for this whole year. Between the US, China and the EU (not to mention instability to Brazil etc etc) things just appear way sketchier then they actually are. The underlying economics might not be as bad as people think but when has that ever mattered.

Hello, Beanies! Hope you're all doing well this Friday!

Still loving Another Oh Hae-Young as well as Beautiful Gong Shim, though I feel like AOHY didn't entirely need that extension and BGS is getting mighty frustrating with all the misunderstanding and miscommunication. Lucky Romance is finally FLYING for me, and I absolutely adore Ryu Jun-yeol. The humor in the show just makes me giggle. And the humor with Ryang-ha and Dal-nim makes me laugh embarrassingly loudly.

As for the bunch of new shows that premiered this week... I watched the first episodes of both Doctors and Beautiful Mind and... I'm not sure which I'll stick with.

Right now, Beautiful Mind intrigues me more because of its darkness and the fact that Park So-dam really endeared me in the very first episode. I haven't seen her or Jang Hyuk in anything before but I was impressed by their acting. Will probably watch episode 2.

Doctors first episode was fun, and I was impressed by Park Shin-hye, but I didn't sign up for a high school drama and girls fighting in a bathroom (I know it's not a school drama, but I just wasn't expecting the entire first ep to be set in the past), so I think I'll wait for the recaps and see if it's worth watching for me.

However-- Wanted is the show I've decided to pick up. If you can suspend some disbelief, it's a great, intense thriller. So twisted and horrible but fascinating. I like my thrillers so I'll be watching this one for sure!

This has been a strange 3 days.

Was chuffed to bits on Wed at Ireland beating Italy to send us into the knock out stages of Euro 2016, with a match against France to follow.

On Thursday disheartened to hear that I failed at an interview to get an internal promotion.

And now today I am absolutely devastated that the UK (where I now live) has narrowly voted out of the EU. It has been a nasty, bitter, hate-filled referendum, which has brought to the surface, quite abhorrent, racist tones to the public arena. As an Irish citizen living in the UK, I am very worried about my future here. For the first time since I moved to this country, I don't feel welcome.

So thanks to Am,pogo, junny and everyone else who recommeded jdrama rom-coms [ more comedy] to me.Now I am doomed, for how long God knows.Last week I watched hokaru no hitari, and Date, now I can't undo the effect it did to my constant kdrama watch syndrome.I went back to watch lucky romance, and gong shim, and they just seemed so.. random,:( and dunno, full of cliches and fluffy materials? But it was me who enjoyed episodes after episodes and felt for the charms of su ho and dan-tae,but now all I can think of taniguchi san and his quirks. His educated idler and fondness for his room, and the books, and his profound logic for dismissing social norms and the way society works now was so fantastic lol and not to say yoriko sun didn't get behind with her duck face,or routine way of following life, even love or getting married for that matter.Watching the drama was like watching a french movie, but what can I say I loved it way more than any other european movies that I have seen.Even with the common subject matters like love, marriage, family, affection, parental relations, the drama experimented on a whole different level and it was absolutely nerve racking and hysterical. Can't miss praising Washio too,who was so adorably cute with his consistent pursuit for yoriko san's romantic and marital interest lol. It's funny how j-dramas[at least only the two that I've seen so fart] don't keep the supporting characters one dimensional, rather they have their own charm, like a good fiction or story.I'm leaving out the details of my love for the parents, and taniguchi san's friends, but they were beyond amazing too.But because I've started with this drama,I am finding it hard to go back to kdramas now.I feel suddenly lost..sigh.So here's hoping that the daze goes away soon,so I can start having interest in my old love too lol.

Ah and I loved hotaru no hikari equally! Bucho! And hotaku is so lovely,it was so adorable when bucho [pardon my spelling] was defending hotaku's way of life who needs to stay messy in her private space so she can work without mistakes at her work space! And I miss the porch too, goes without saying.

Anyway there goes my rant. I have tried to watch other jdramas too,and have browsed through numerous j-drama favorite sites till now,but none was as promising as HNH or Date so far..

Every now and then I fall into a jdorama binge too. I like that their shorter format makes them more tightly-written. Plus they make jdoramas about virtually anything so there's always something new. From teachers, to homeless guy, to CEO, to monks, to High School Host Club (LOL)

But there is one small problem with them that makes me go back to kdramas: the romance. jdoramas are stingy on romance. :(

I'm not saying one is better than the other. Just that, sometimes I'm in the mood for wacky jdorama, sometimes for cheesy swoony kdramas... anyway, the more dramas there are, the more things we can pick from and watch. So having access to both is a win-win for us viewers.

I also have the same feeling when watching Jdrama, I feel like I'll binge watching many of them since I really like their approach then I already catch up. The subs for jdrama is not fast so it slows me down.

Sometimes it takes quite a time to come back to Kdrama, it more because of fave actor project or for dose of romance

I think you might like this drama for rom-com, yeah Jdrama lacked rom-com nowadays tbh
- Love Shuffle 2009
- Himitsu no Hanazono 2007
- Nodame Cantabile 2008
- 5 Ji Kara 9 Ji Made 2015
- Kekkon Dekinai Otoko 2006

tbh Jdrama doesn't really available in many sites

and tbh I really like Hiroki Hasegawa/Taniguchi, Anne Watanabe/yoriko, and Yuto Nakajima

ps: if you like Hiroki Hasegawa, I recommend Mozu for the thriller genre

Thanks Sancheezy for your comment. I quite like him in Feast of Gods, so I would like to see more of his acting, but most of his recent dramas are so long, OWW is the only one with 20 eps. Also, i like Han Hye Jin and ji Jin Hee (ya, that actor in He Who Can't Marry, I like him as Min Jeong-ho in Dae Jang Geum), ok, I will probaby find time to watch it.

0

Glad you enjoyed Hotaru no Hikari! It has two seasons and a film, so there's more Buchou to come if you haven't watched season 2. Also, you can see a younger and very suave Fujiki Naohito (Buchou) in Love Revolution. The 90s and early-mid 2000s had plenty of solid rom-coms that were also thoughtful and had more depth, and it's a pity Japan no longer does that kind of rom-coms anymore.

But generally, I find that Japanese dramas tend to be more concise about storytelling without losing the necessary stuff, especially the good ones. You don't need 20 episodes when you can tell a story in 11-12. I would say Nodame Cantabile and Long Vacation are excellent examples of that. Love Shuffle is another smartly written rom-com.

Ooh, Sorimachi was pretty hot himself back in those days, I loved him in Over Time. He had great chemistry with Esumi Makiko. His career faded a bit in the last decade, but it seems he's back in dramas on a more regular basis.

Are you watching Sorimachi in Aibou?

Out of his more recent dramas, I only watched a short drama Genkai Shuraku Kabushiki Kaisha, he has aged so much (but still handsome in a rugged way), and was taking on roles of father (also in Good Life Arigato Papa Sayonara) and minor roles in movies. Does he has much screen time in Aibō? It has too many seasons, and i don't have the patience for long dramas.

0

I haven't seen Aibou, but Sorimachi must be getting enough screentime for he's appearing in the coming season as well. So he's in both season 14 and 15. He's billed right after Mizutani Yutaka, who plays the lead detective and is the mainstay of the Aibou series. I don't think you have to start from season 1, though.

I haven't seen him in his dad roles, but he doesn't look half bad in the Aibou stills. Still rockin' it!

0

Thanks junny for your recommendation, now it makes me curious about his acting as a detective in Aibou. But unfortunately, I can't find any drama site with subbed S14 , so I'll have to patiently wait for it to be subbed.
